A requirement for a complex satellite component incorporating several tight tolerances for flatness and parallelism had to be manufactured from solid aluminium.

Thin wall thickness were part of the design feature in order to reduce weight.

To ensure the component remained stress free and stable several roughing and finishing operations needed to be performed to produce a dimensionally correct part.

After initial interrogation of the solid model suggestions were offered to the designer resulting in the wall thickness being reduced further without structurally compromising the component.

The finished part produced was lighter enabling a furtherl cost saving on payload.
