Due to a requirement for a high precision part for a scientific instrument High-Tech Engineering were required to evaluate the possibility of machining 16 tight tolerance bores.

The bores had a tolerance of 0.003 microns on dia to a depth of 170 mm, With an overall flatness and parallel tolerance of 0.01mm on the part.

Distortion after final machining was also a factor because of thin wall sections and a treatment process.

Stress relieving the part during stages of manufacture was a crucial part of the machining process and frequent dimensional checks were made to assess any material movement before the final finishing operation.

Special fixtures were then required to mask the bores during the treatment process.
